Kurrat (Allium ampeloprasum var. kurrat) — herbaceous perennial bulb.

Unlike an annual crop, the work here is front-loaded into establishment: get the planting and the site right and the same plants crop for several seasons.

Core growing advice on this page is checked against named horticultural sources — see References.

Soil & Growing Conditions

Water: moist but well-drained (RHS, species-level); prefers a dry position (theferns.info, Kurrat Group)

Growth Stages

Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing 0 Sow early spring under glass and transplant in May for an early/larger crop, or sow mid-spring outdoors and transplant mid-to-late summer for a smaller, later crop (theferns.info).
Establishment and leaf growth 3 Grows as a clump of leaves 10-30cm long from a much-reduced bulb; prefers a sunny, dry, well-drained position (theferns.info).
Cut-and-come-again harvest 3 Leaves trimmed for use regrow rapidly, giving multiple harvests through the season rather than one cut (Veggies Info).
Flowering 6 Flowering scape 45cm-1.8m tall; summer blooms of small, tightly-packed pale purple flowers in spherical umbels, papery capsules (RHS, species-level); the flowers and young flowering stems are also edible, raw, with a similar flavour to the leaves (theferns.info).

Quick Facts

Factor Value
Soil texture chalk, clay, loam or sandy (RHS); succeeds in clay (theferns.info)

Harvest & Storage

When to pick: Cut-and-come-again leaf crop: trim leaves once they reach usable length and the plant regrows rapidly, allowing repeated harvests through the growing season rather than a single one-off cut (Veggies Info).

Diseases

Allium white rot
moderate

Stromatinia cepivora (syn. Sclerotium cepivorum)

RHS, species-level (Allium ampeloprasum): "Susceptible to onion white rot and downy mildews." Kurrat is the same species as Elephant Garlic and Leek, both susceptible to it; no source names white rot for the Kurrat…

Pests

Allium leaf miner
low

Phytomyza gymnostoma

Likely rather than confirmed: no source names kurrat directly, but RHS links Allium leaf miner to "Leeks, onion, chives, shallot and garlic", and elephant garlic and cultivated leek are the same species (Allium…

Plan your Kurrat planting

Timing for Kurrat follows soil temperature and frost, not the calendar date. The Global vegetable planting calendar explains the method. To work out where it fits in your beds, sketch your plot in the free Garden Layout Planner.

  1. A secondary gardening reference rather than a university or horticultural authority, used only for kurrat-specific cultivation detail the RHS species page does not cover; explicitly lower authority than RHS. Kurrat Group: herbaceous bulb perennial, ~1.0m, producing 6-9 leaves 10-30cm long sheathed around a flowering scape 45-180cm tall. Prefers a sunny position in light, well-drained soil; succeeds in clay soils; tolerates pH 5.2-8.3; prefers a dry position. Bulbs planted fairly deeply. Usually grown from seed: for early/larger plants sow early spring under glass and transplant in May; for smaller/later plants sow mid-spring outdoors and transplant mid-to-late summer. Edible leaves (raw or cooked, pleasant mild-to-strong garlic flavour, often used in salads) and edible flowers/young flowering stems (similar flavour, best used to flavour cooked foods once mature). Cultivated form, not found wild; originated in Egypt, primarily cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East. No specific poisoning reports for this variety, but the genus as a whole can be toxic to some mammals (especially dogs) in large quantities.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against international horticultural research and extension sources. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
