A British spring does not keep to the calendar

A cold, sodden April pushes everything back three weeks — and the gardener who had a plan now has a broken one. Most printable planners are blank grids, and most planting calendars online were written for American gardens. This planner gives you UK timings to start from, then space to cross a date out, write the new one beside it, and keep going.

Not ready to buy? Our free UK vegetable planting calendar gives you the sowing dates for free, and the free online garden planner sketches your bed layout. Come back for the planner when you want the whole season on paper.

What’s inside the UK vegetable garden & allotment planner

  • Month by month: for every month, what to sow, what to plant out and a garden task checklist — plus a weather-notes page to record what your season actually did.
  • Frost dates for eight UK regions: from coastal Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland, with space for your own last and first frost.
  • Planning your plot: garden layout and raised-bed planners, a crop-rotation planner with a four-bed rotation for UK plots, seed inventory, seed-starting schedule, fertiliser and irrigation plans, a budget tracker and seasonal planning.
  • 20 crop growing guides: tomatoes to Brussels sprouts — sowing months, sun, spacing, germination time, harvest window, soil, watering, companions and common UK problems for each.
  • 13 trackers and journals: planting log, germination, watering, feeding, pests, tasks, harvest, yield summary, seasonal review, lessons learned, garden journal and next-season planning.
  • Companion planting, honestly: the traditional pairings, with a clear note on which claims have evidence behind them and which are folklore.

How to plan an allotment or vegetable garden in five steps

This is the order the planner is built in — and the order that saves the most mistakes:

  1. Find your frost dates — use the eight-region frost table to set your last spring frost and first autumn frost. Every sowing date hangs off these two.
  2. Map the plot — sketch your beds on the layout and raised-bed pages, noting sun, shade and where the water butt is.
  3. Decide the rotation — legumes, then brassicas, then roots, then potatoes and onions — moving each group on one bed a year, because clubroot and white rot persist in soil for years.
  4. Schedule the sowing — work through the month pages and the seed-starting schedule, counting back from your frost dates.
  5. Record, then review — log what you sowed and harvested. By next winter the trackers tell you what earned its space — the most useful page you will own is the one you wrote yourself.

Free templates, apps or a planner: which do you need?

Free printable templates Garden planner apps This planner

Best for: allotment holders and vegetable gardeners who have found that generic calendars don’t match their season, and want rotation, layout and records in one place. Not for you: if you garden outside the UK — there are USA, Canada and Global editions, each written for its own conditions.

The SoilCommander Masterclass, the free illustrated bonus included with the planner

Included free: The SoilCommander Masterclass. An illustrated companion that teaches the methods behind the planner: choosing and sizing beds, reading your soil and pH, rotating by plant family, what companion planting can and can’t do, sowing by frost date and soil temperature, watering to the depth of the roots, protecting crops without guesswork, and the end-of-season review. Every point is checked against RHS and university extension research. Delivered with your planner download.

Who made this planner

Written and fact-checked by the SoilCommander editorial team under the direction of Nitin Sharma, co-founder. Sowing dates and spacings are checked against RHS guidance, and frost dates against Met Office data. The same team writes the UK vegetable growing guides on this site — read a few to judge the advice before you buy. Spot something that doesn’t match your garden? Tell us; corrections go into the next edition.

Frequently asked questions

Is this built for UK growing conditions?

Yes. Timings are checked against RHS guidance, frost dates against Met Office data, and it uses UK crop names and metric units throughout.

When should I start planning my allotment for next year?

Over the winter. The planner’s January page starts with ordering seed and planning the rotation, and the first sowings under cover begin in January and February.

Is there a free allotment planner?

Yes — our free UK planting calendar and free online garden planner are on this site. This PDF adds the month-by-month pages, rotation planner, growing guides and trackers as pages you print and keep.

Is it a physical planner or a digital download?

Digital PDF only. Nothing is posted, so there’s no delivery wait or shipping charge.

What paper size is it, and can I use it on an iPad?

It is formatted for A4, and prints on US Letter with “fit to page”. As a standard PDF it also opens in annotation apps such as GoodNotes or Notability, so you can write on it with a stylus.

Is it dated? Can I reuse it?

The month pages are undated, so the planner works every year. Print any page as often as you like.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It opens with how to use the planner, and the 20 growing guides give spacing, timing and the common problems for each crop.

Does it include crop rotation?

Yes, with a four-bed rotation by plant family, so you are not guessing where things went last year.

Why pay for this if there’s a free Garden Planner tool?

The free tool sketches your plot and works out bed layout and spacing — it stays free. This PDF adds the month-by-month pages, the rotation planner, the growing guides and the trackers, as pages you print and fill in by hand.

What if the planner isn’t right for me?

You’re covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Contact us within 30 days of purchase and we’ll refund you in full. There’s nothing to send back.
