What SoilCommander Is
SoilCommander is a UK vegetable growing planning resource. Everything on this site exists to answer two questions: what should I plant, and when should I plant it — for real UK growing conditions, not a generic climate.
The site has three parts:
- A free month-by-month UK vegetable planting calendar covering sowing, planting-out and harvest windows across the year.
- More than 60 crop timing and growing guides — when to plant each crop, how to grow it, and how to deal with the pests and problems UK growers actually face.
- A printable UK Vegetable Garden Planner PDF for gardeners who want their season on paper.
How Our Guides Are Made
Every guide on SoilCommander is written and maintained by the SoilCommander Editorial Team. We do not publish timing advice we cannot source. Our editorial method:
- Cross-checked recommendations. Every sowing, planting and harvest window is checked against Royal Horticultural Society growing advice and Met Office regional climate data before publication.
- Regional honesty. A planting date that works in Cornwall can fail in Aberdeen. Guides carry regional callouts for southern England, northern England, Scotland and Wales rather than a single national date.
- Seasonal review. Guides are reviewed and updated seasonally so dates, varieties and advice stay current rather than rotting in place.
The Planner
The UK Vegetable Garden Planner PDF is the paid counterpart to the free calendar: a printable planner with month-by-month planting pages, raised bed and plot layout sheets, crop rotation pages and a harvest tracker. The free calendar tells you when; the planner is where you plan your own beds, rotations and notes. If the free calendar covers what you need, use it — the planner is there when you want the whole season organised in one printed document.
Sources & Corrections
We cite primary sources — principally the Royal Horticultural Society and the Met Office — inline in our guides, where the claim is made, not in a bibliography nobody reads.
If you spot an error anywhere on SoilCommander — a wrong date, an outdated variety recommendation, a claim that doesn't match your region's reality — contact us. We check every report and fix confirmed errors. Getting UK planting timing right is the entire point of this site, and corrections make it better for every grower who reads it after you.
