Slugs and Snails in the Garden UK
The most damaging pest in UK vegetable gardens. Here's how to identify, prevent, and control them without harming other wildlife.
Pest control advice verified against RHS guidance by the SoilCommander Growing Team.
Identification
Slugs and snails feed mainly at night and in wet conditions, leaving irregular holes in leaves, stems, and roots, plus a characteristic silver slime trail. Seedlings are most vulnerable. Damage is worst from March to May and again in September–October when populations peak.
Prevention First
- Encourage natural predators: hedgehogs, frogs, toads, ground beetles, and thrushes all eat slugs — create habitat for them
- Copper tape barriers around pots and raised beds deter slugs effectively
- Wool pellets around vulnerable plants create a physical barrier
- Clear debris — remove hiding places like boards, pots, and leaf litter near beds
- Water in the morning rather than evening to reduce surface moisture at night
- Grit or sharp sand around seedlings creates an uncomfortable surface
Biological Control
Nematodes (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) are the most effective eco-friendly control for slugs. Applied as a soil drench, they parasitise slugs underground. Most effective when soil is above 5°C. Apply in spring and early autumn for best results. Available by mail order; not all garden centres stock them.
Organic Slug Pellets
Ferric phosphate pellets (e.g. Sluggo, Growing Success) are safe for wildlife, pets, and children. Apply sparingly around vulnerable plants. Metaldehyde pellets are banned in the UK.
Plan Your Garden to Reduce Pest Pressure
Good spacing, rotation, and timing all reduce slug damage. It's in the planner.

Fix The Cause, Then Plan The Next Crop
Troubleshooting works best when you improve the growing conditions and record what changed for the next season.
