Growth Stages

Stage BBCH Notes
Planting 0 Propagate by seed, by bulb offsets, or from bulbils. Plant bulbs fairly deeply (tier 2) in full sun, in well-drained chalk, loam or sand -- container growing is recommended where garden soil is heavy clay prone to winter waterlogging. RHS.
Establishment 3 RHS: takes one to two years to reach maturity as a vegetable -- considerably longer than an annual leek, since this is a true perennial building up a permanent clump rather than a single crop grown to size in one season.
Flowering & bulbil production 6 Densely packed spherical heads of pale purple-pink flowers appear in mid and late summer (RHS). The flowerhead also produces bulbils abundantly (tier 2) -- small aerial offsets that can themselves be harvested or replanted.
Harvest & division 8 Leaves and side shoots can be cut for use once established. Bulbils are harvested in late summer once flowering finishes, eaten fresh or planted directly or potted for spring planting (tier 2). Divide bulb offsets in late summer/early autumn and replant bulblets immediately (tier 2) to keep the clump productive.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against Canadian hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with provincial agriculture and university extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
