Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing and germination 0 Sow seed 2cm deep once air temperature is reliably above 70°F/21°C (NC State Extension); germinates within about 2 weeks in a warm greenhouse (PFAF).
Vegetative growth 3 Transplant outdoors after the last frost, in full sun in well-drained soil; water only once the soil has dried out (PFAF; NC State Extension).
Flowering and fruiting 6 Can flower and fruit in its first year from seed (NC State Extension).
Harvest 8 Root is dug once flowers/fruit have formed and leaves begin to dry, typically in autumn, then dried for later use (NC State Extension; PFAF).

Harvest & Storage

When to sow and plant Ashwagandha depends on your own frost dates. Check the Canada vegetable planting calendar. To work out where it fits in your beds, sketch your plot in the free Garden Layout Planner.

What the research guides add

Ashwagandha is a warm-climate shrub, and NC State gives a clear temperature cue for sowing.

  • A small shrub or herb grown as an annual in zones colder than 8; in its native habitat it is a ground-covering perennial. (NC State Extension)
  • Sow seed 2 cm deep once the air temperature is above 70°F, in full sun and good-draining, slightly alkaline sandy soil. (NC State Extension)
  • Water only when the soil dries out, as it does not like wet feet. It does well in pots and in cooler climates will need to be brought indoors. (NC State Extension)
  • When grown from seed it will flower and fruit in its first year. (NC State Extension)

Frequently Asked Questions

What soil pH does ashwagandha need?

A pH of about 6–7.5. That span reflects genuine variation between the authorities we cite rather than a single agreed figure — the References section lists each source's exact range.

Plan next season before the problems start

Short-season growing is arithmetic before it is technique: days to maturity against frost-free days decides what will finish at all. The Canada Garden Planner does that subtraction for your region before you sow.

Every growing guide is checked against RHS, USDA Cooperative Extension, and other named horticultural authorities before publishing. How we check our facts.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against Canadian hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with provincial agriculture and university extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
