The flower, at ground level

Small and yellow, carried right at the soil surface. After pollination the stalk pushes the pod down into the ground.

Almost globose and indehiscent, about 2.5 cm across, ripening underground like a peanut.

Opened

Usually one seed to a pod, sometimes two. The pods do not split on their own, which is why the crop is lifted whole.
