Hardening off and planting out 1 Move outdoors after late May once night temperatures reliably reach 12°C, hardened off for 2-3 weeks first; container-grown or spaced 38-45cm apart in the ground (30cm for dwarf types) (RHS).
Flowering and fruit set 6 Damp down the greenhouse daily for humidity; keep soil evenly moist to prevent flower buds dropping; feed weekly with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser once flowering begins (RHS).
Fruit ripening and harvest 8 Harvest greenhouse crops mid-summer into autumn, outdoor crops from August; pick green for immediate use or leave on the plant to ripen fully, though yield is reduced this way (RHS).

When to pick: Fruit ripens from pale yellow to red; small pods typically around 2cm long. Chillies ripen mid-summer to early autumn; keep picking to encourage further flowering.

Calcium (Ca)

deficiency (physiological, uptake-related)

Correction

Blossom end rot: a dark, sunken, leathery patch at the blossom end of the fruit. It is a calcium TRANSPORT failure driven by irregular watering, not a soil calcium shortage and not a pathogen -- RHS is explicit that it is not corrected by adding calcium. Water evenly and mulch to buffer soil moisture; fruit already affected will not recover, but subsequent fruit sets clean. Reclassified from the diseases table 2026-08-26: it was listed as a disease, which points readers at a fungicide for a watering problem.
