Growth Stages

Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing and germination 0 Sow 5cm deep, indoors April-May at 18-20°C in a propagator, or outdoors May-June once soil reaches 15°C, spaced 15cm apart in rows 45cm apart (RHS).
Hardening off and establishment 1 Harden off indoor-raised seedlings before planting out in early summer; most UK varieties reach about 60cm and are self-supporting, though windy sites may need canes and string (RHS).
Flowering and pod set 6 Water regularly in dry spells, especially once flowering and forming pods -- soya beans are thirsty plants; mulch to retain moisture (RHS).
Pod filling and harvest 8 Harvest edamame in summer while pods are still green with plump beans inside; for dry mature beans, leave on the plant until late September as leaves start to fall (RHS).

Harvest & Storage

When to pick: RHS: edamame harvest when "pods are still green, with plump green beans inside" (summer); for dried beans, harvest "from late September, when the leaves start to fall from the plants, often leaving just brown stems with lots of hanging pods". NC State: for edamame, "harvest the pods when the seeds are plump and the pod is just beginning to lose its fresh green color"; for dried beans, "allow the pods to mature and dry on the plant".

Storage

Edamame best used fresh; dried beans stored long-term

Every growing guide is checked against RHS, USDA Cooperative Extension, and other named horticultural authorities before publishing. How we check our facts.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against Canadian hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with provincial agriculture and university extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
