Sowing 0 RHS: grow from seed using standard vegetable-sowing technique, only in spring/summer. NC State: rapid growth rate once germinated, spaced 12in-3ft apart depending on planting method.
Establishment 3 NC State: full sun, loam/silt soil, tolerates occasionally dry conditions but dislikes wet soil -- good drainage matters more than fertility at this stage.
Leaf and pod development 6 RHS: forms dense foliage over summer, useful for weed suppression if grown as green manure. NC State: seeds develop within small pods, needing warm, dry weather (45-80°F) to mature properly.

When to pick: NC State: leaves and seeds harvested summer and fall; seeds are small (about 1/4in) and need warm, dry weather (45-80°F) to develop and mature fully.

Storage

Green leaves taste similar to maple syrup and are best used fresh; dried seeds are used in butterscotch, cheese and licorice flavouring, and in curries (NC State).
