Planting tubers 0 Plant firm, smooth tubers 10-15cm deep, spaced 30cm apart, in late winter to early spring, in a sunny, moisture-retentive but not waterlogged site (RHS).
Shoot emergence and mounding 1 Once stems reach about 30cm, mound soil around the base about 15cm high for stability; on windy sites use tall supports and twine (RHS).
Tall summer growth and tuber swelling 3 Water regularly in dry summer spells to swell the tubers; cut tall stems back to about 1.5m in late July/August if needed to manage height and wind risk (RHS).
Dieback and harvest 8 From late autumn, once leaves yellow, cut stems to about 8cm and dig tubers with a fork as needed; tubers keep well in the ground through winter but do not store once lifted (RHS).

When to pick: RHS: tubers ready "from late autumn onward", with plants generally producing "10 or more tubers each"; cut stems down to about 8cm to mark tuber locations, and tubers can be left in the ground through winter until needed. NC State: harvested "approximately two weeks after the flowers fade (October-December)".

Best left in the ground and lifted as needed through winter; do not store long-term once dug as tubers dry out quickly
