Kaniwa (also spelt canahua or cañihua) is an Andean grain, and the conditions it is adapted to are the best guide to where it will struggle.
- It is adapted to the harsh climate of the Andean Altiplano: elevations around 4,000 m, frequent frosts and hail, and arid-saline soils with rainfall of 500 to 600 mm. (BYU Orphaned Crops)
