Factor Value
Soil texture Sandy or silty soil, or a sand/gravel-heavy container mix that replicates coastal conditions (Allotment Online)
Drainage Consistently moist to waterlogged mud in its native marsh habitat, but a cultivated bed or pot should be well-drained between waterings rather than left standing (PFAF; Allotment Online)
Lifecycle Annual halophyte -- germinates, crops and sets seed within a single season (PFAF; Turcios et al. 2023)
Edible parts stems, seeds

Soil & Growing Conditions

Water: Watered with a measured salt solution rather than fresh water -- Allotment Online specifies one teaspoon of sea salt per pint of water; Turcios et al. (2023) found 15 g/L NaCl (roughly one and a half tablespoons per litre) optimal in a controlled hydroponic trial. PFAF: needs "a rich organic soil with ample nitrogen" and "cannot grow in the shade".

Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing 0 PFAF: best sown in situ as soon as ripe in a well-drained outdoor bed -- seed selected from bushy plants up to 40cm tall growing nearer the high tide mark. Allotment Online gives a practical home-garden window of March-May in moist compost or well-drained soil.
Establishment 2 PFAF describes it as "difficult to grow in cultivation" -- plants need a sunny, sheltered spot and regular watering with a measured salt solution rather than fresh water; standing water is avoided between waterings (Allotment Online). Protect from hard frost and cold spells over winter (Allotment Online).
Vegetative growth 3 Turcios et al. (2023): in a controlled hydroponic trial, fresh biomass rose through the season and peaked around week 10 after transplanting, with flowering beginning around the same week (over 50% of plants in flower by week 10).
Harvest 8 PFAF: pick stems once about 15cm long, using the top 10cm and leaving the bottom 5cm to resprout; at its best late summer. Allotment Online: harvest July-August while stems are still green -- once stems turn red the plant is about to flower and set seed, so pick before then, and take only small portions per plant to allow regrowth.
Flowering and seed set 6 Ranjbar et al. (2022): under field conditions with direct seawater irrigation, the plant's forage (biomass) production potential proved more reliably achievable than its seed production -- the best-performing sowing date (8 March) still yielded a comparatively modest dry weight of 220.7 g/m2.

Harvest & Storage

When to pick: PFAF: pick when stems reach about 15cm, taking the top 10cm and leaving the bottom 5cm on the plant to produce new shoots; at its best for eating in late summer. Allotment Online: harvest while stems are still green -- reddening stems signal the plant is about to flower and go to seed, so harvest before that point, taking only small portions from each plant.

Storage

Allotment Online: blanch in boiling water for 1-2 minutes, then plunge into an ice-water bath before freezing in an airtight container.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against RHS and Met Office guidance. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
