When to pick: RHS: "Fruits are ready to harvest when they produce their characteristic melon fragrance and the stalk begins to crack"; ripe melons "should give slightly if you press the base". Clemson: cantaloupes ready at "full slip" when "the stem separates completely...the cantaloupe fruit has achieved its maximum sugar development"; some honeydew varieties "will not slip but will become paler in color"; "about 30 to 35 days are required from fruit pollination to harvest for most cantaloupe varieties".
