True pearl onion (as distinct from small-bulbing Allium cepa cultivars also marketed as "pearl onions"). Hardiness zones 4-9. Full sun; moderate soil. Blooms May-June, lavender flowers. Upright bulb type, compound structure of multiple bulblets of varying sizes, comparable to a garlic head; bulblets are solid (unlike modern pearl onions), making them suitable for pickling. Deer-resistant. Suitable for bedding or border plantings. When harvesting, tiny bulblets often remain in the soil and regenerate the following season. Bulblets traditionally pickled across Germany, Holland and Italy; sought by contemporary chefs as specialty produce.
