Factor Value
Drainage Grown flooded: UF/IFAS keeps 4-6in of standing water over the soil surface once plants are established; PFAF: prefers wet soil and can grow directly in water; soil itself ranges light/sandy to heavy/clay, slightly acid preferred, needs fertile rich ground.
Lifecycle UF/IFAS: needs a growing period of 220 frost-free days.

Stage BBCH Notes
Planting 0 UF/IFAS: for a permanent planting, place corms 4-5in deep and 30in apart in similarly spaced rows, then flood the plot and keep it submerged for a day before draining naturally to settle the soil. PFAF: corms need a minimum soil temperature of 15°C to sprout; alternatively, sow seed as soon as ripe under glass.
Establishment and reflooding 3 UF/IFAS: once plants reach about 12in high, reflood the area and keep it flooded for the remainder of the season -- this is not a crop for uncontrolled swamp or marshland, water levels need active management.
Leafy growth 3 UF/IFAS: secondary plants begin appearing around the parent plant within 6-8 weeks under favourable conditions. PFAF: growth is fastest and most vigorous at 30-35°C during this leafy stage -- genuinely warm conditions this crop needs a long, hot growing season to reach.
Corm formation and harvest 8 PFAF: corm formation favours slightly cooler conditions, roughly 5°C below the leafy-growth optimum. UF/IFAS: corms reach edible size in late fall; drain the water about 30 days before harvest so the corms can be lifted. PFAF reports commercial yields of 20-40 tonnes per hectare are achievable under good conditions.

When to pick: UF/IFAS: corms reach edible size in late fall after a full summer of growth; water is drained from the plot about 30 days before harvest.

Storage

PFAF: lift tubers at the end of the growing season and store in a cool, damp, frost-free position over winter -- both to eat and to provide planting stock for spring.

Plan next season before the problems start

Short-season growing is arithmetic before it is technique: days to maturity against frost-free days decides what will finish at all. The Canada Garden Planner does that subtraction for your region before you sow.

Every growing guide is checked against RHS, USDA Cooperative Extension, and other named horticultural authorities before publishing. How we check our facts.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against Canadian hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with provincial agriculture and university extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
