Sowing and germination 0 Soak seed overnight in clean water, then sow about 1cm deep under cover from late February into early March; seed needs 16-18C to germinate (Plantura, Balcony Garden Web).
Thinning and establishment 1 Thin seedlings once 8-10cm tall to leave 15-20cm between plants; give ample sun, ideally 6-8 hours a day, and keep the roots constantly moist or wet (Balcony Garden Web, Plantura).

  5. Originates from tropical and subtropical zones, found naturally in streams, ponds, rivers and flooded rice fields; known as phak bung in Thailand and kangkong in Indonesia. Thick, hollow stems with alternating leaves; grows rapidly, potentially to 3m in length, creeping or floating depending on variety. Cannot thrive outdoors in the UK climate -- "can only thrive under artificial conditions such as in a greenhouse - it is simply too cold outdoors"; use insulating boards of wood or polystyrene to protect against cold. Seeds need 16-18C to germinate; sow end of February to beginning of March. Demands consistently moist or wet conditions, making hydroponic growing ideal. Harvest after 4-6 weeks under ideal conditions, cut-and-come-again: harvest everything except the base leaves, as radical pruning encourages the plant to sprout and branch.
