Water: About 30in of water over the growing season, applied every 7-14 days to a depth of 18-24in via drip or soaker hose rather than overhead sprinklers (USU Extension); good moisture is particularly important as fruit swells in early-mid summer (RHS)

Planting and establishment 0 Plant a partially trained fan from a specialist fruit nursery, late autumn to March, 20-30cm from a warm south/south-west wall angled towards it, in deep fertile well-drained soil (RHS). USU Extension gives the US orchard alternative: space free-standing trees 12-16ft apart and match the cultivar's winter chilling-hour requirement (roughly 500-1000 hours below 45°F) to the local climate.
Flowering and pollination 6 Flowers early in spring when few pollinating insects are active, so hand-pollinate with a small paintbrush over several dry sunny days for a good crop; protect open flowers from frost with fleece, hessian or an old sheet overnight, removed by day (RHS).
Fruit development and thinning 7 Thin fruit at hazelnut-to-walnut size to one every 20cm/8in, removing awkward, distorted or small fruit first (RHS); USU Extension's equivalent is to keep about 20-25 fruiting laterals per tree and thin each to 1-3 fruits at golf-ball size. Prune fan-trained trees in spring and again after fruiting in summer -- never in winter, to avoid silver leaf and bacterial canker infection (RHS).
Ripening and harvest 8 Ripens from July to September depending on variety; pick when fully coloured and the flesh near the stalk feels soft, cupping the fruit and lifting gently so it comes away easily (RHS). Protect ripening fruit from birds, squirrels and wasps with secure netting or fruit sleeves (RHS).

When to pick: Fully coloured, flesh near the stalk feels soft; the fruit should lift away easily when cupped and gently lifted (RHS). USU Extension notes early varieties can be ready from mid-July, late varieties into September, with yields of roughly 1-6 bushels per mature tree.

Storage

Best eaten as soon as possible after picking, ideally still warm from the sun (RHS); if needed, USU Extension notes fruit keeps in a cool area for up to 2 weeks.

  1. Self-fertile. Site: sunny sheltered spot, ideally fan-trained against a south/south-west wall; frost-prone sites unsuitable since peaches flower early. Soil: deep, fertile, well-drained. Plant 20-30cm from wall angled towards it. Fan size 2m tall x 5m across. Rootstock St Julian A. Planting late autumn-March. Watering: regular for first 2 years, more during fruit swell. Mulch late winter/spring. Pruning: spring/summer only (silver leaf/bacterial canker risk); fan trees pruned spring + after fruiting; free-standing pruned summer after fruiting, remove up to 1/4 old fruited wood. Frost protection: fleece over flowers, remove by day. Hand-pollinate with paintbrush over several sunny days. Thin fruit to 8in apart at hazelnut-walnut size. Harvest July-September, fruit soft near stalk, lifts easily. Pests: fruit aphids, brown scale, spotted wing drosophila, wasps, squirrels, birds. Diseases: bacterial canker, blossom wilt, brown rot, honey fungus, peach leaf curl, silver leaf. Do not grow from supermarket stones.

  2. Chilling hours vary by cultivar: ~500hr (Suncrest) to 1000hr (Reliance); match to local climate. Spacing 12-16ft. Soil pH below 8.0, well-drained; amend clay with organic matter/raised beds; chelated iron for alkaline-soil iron deficiency. Irrigation ~30in/season, every 7-14 days, 18-24in deep, drip/soaker not sprinkler. Fertiliser: young trees 1/2 cup 20-0-0 spring (+mid-May if needed), mature trees 1-2 cups 20-0-0 spring, soil test every 3-4yr, stop fertilising after mid-July. Pruning: open-centre/vase system, 4-5 scaffold branches 18-24in above ground at 60-90deg, head back 1-year tree to 28-30in, dormant-season (Feb/March) pruning, keep centre open. Thin to 20-25 fruiting laterals, then 1-3 fruit/lateral at golf-ball size. Pests: peach twig borer (Anarsia lineatella), greater peachtree borer (Synanthedon exitiosa), spider mites, aphids. Diseases: coryneum/shot hole blight, crown/root rot, powdery mildew. Harvest mid-July to September by colour change; store cool up to 2 weeks; yield 1-6 bushels/tree.
