Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing and germination 0 Sow April-May, two seeds per 9cm pot or singly in large modules, covered lightly, kept at 20-25°C; germinates in around 10 days (Garden Organic).
Planting out and establishment 1 Plant out May-June around the four-leaf stage once conditions are warm enough outside, spaced at least 35cm apart, with netting or stake support in place (Garden Organic).
Climbing growth and flowering 6 Vigorous tendril-climbing vine scrambles up walls, fences or netting; greenish-white flowers appear; pinching the tops back once plants reach the top of their support is said to encourage fruiting (RHS, Garden Organic).
Fruiting and harvest 8 Harvest as soon as fruit reaches edible size, from late July until frosts; fruits become hollow and do not change colour as they ripen (Garden Organic).

When to pick: Harvest fruit young and tender for eating raw (cucumber-like flavour); older fruit becomes fibrous and needs cooking. Prolific fruiter -- continued harvesting encourages more fruit through to autumn frosts.
