Full sun. Heavy feeder, needs plenty of compost. Vigorous trailing perennial vine on a trellis, extremely fast growing (over 4 feet in two weeks from a new planting), needs pruning to control spread. Propagated by planting a whole mature fruit horizontally with a third exposed above soil level, or from stem cuttings at least 8 inches long. Harvest fruit immature at 4-6 inches long for tender skin, or leave to mature. The starchy tuberous root is used like a potato. Perennial vine, tropical/subtropical, requires a long frost-free growing season (120-180 days to harvest per wider horticultural literature); hardy in USDA zones 7a-11b where the rootstock can survive winter and resprout.
