Planting 0 RHS: plant in spring or autumn (avoid midsummer), spaced up to 90cm apart depending on mature size, at the same depth as the container; moist, fertile soil improved with compost or well-rotted manure.
Spring shoot emergence 0 UVM: tightly furled spring shoots emerge and can be cut near the soil for eating, often compared to asparagus. RHS: plants remain dormant until mid-spring, and emerging foliage can need fleece protection from late frosts.
Foliage growth and feeding 3 RHS: apply an annual mulch of compost or manure in borders, or Growmore on poorer soils in early spring; container plants need monthly liquid feeding through the growing season.
Late-summer flowering and autumn tidy 6 UVM: flowers appear in late summer on scapes with trumpet-shaped blooms, lettuce-flavoured and edible as a garnish. RHS: cut back dying foliage and flower stalks in late autumn for tidiness; divide large clumps in autumn or early spring, keeping 1-3 buds per division.

When to pick: UVM: cut young spring shoots near the soil while still tightly furled, before leaves unfurl -- flavour and texture are often compared to asparagus. Mature unfurled leaves can also be harvested but turn tougher and more bitter with age.

Storage

Wash and dry like any harvested vegetable, then use fresh in salads or fried with butter and garlic (UVM).
