How to Grow Loofahs USA
On this page
In the US, loofahs are ready to harvest 60–90 days after planting.
This is a frost-tender crop — it will not survive below about 41°F (5°C) — so the growing year is built around starting it under cover and moving it out only once the risk of frost has passed.
The short answer
- Ready in
- 60–90 days
- Site
- soil pH 5.5–6.8

Needs 140+ warm, frost-free days; roughly 150-200 days from seed to a dried sponge. Thrives at 70-90°F/70-90°F (21-32°C). In cooler climates, start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost after soaking seeds in water for 24 hours. Give vines a fence or sturdy trellis so gourds hang straight and do not rot on the ground; spacing 100-150cm for good air movement. Well-drained, light-to-medium-textured, humus-rich soil, pH 6.0-6.8. Harvest for sponges when the gourd is about 60cm long, turns yellow-brown, feels light, and the skin pulls away from the fibre inside; harvest younger, while still green and tender, for eating as a vegetable.

Plan next season before the problems start
Almost everything on this page resolves to your own frost dates rather than the calendar — the last spring frost moves by roughly two months between zone 3 and zone 10. The USA Garden Planner works from your zone so the timing is already decided before the season starts.

How this guide is put together
The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against USDA hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with Cooperative Extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
