Shark fin melons (Cucurbita ficifolia) — RHS treats it as an annual climbing/trailing squash.

Unlike an annual crop, the work here is front-loaded into establishment: get the planting and the site right and the same plants crop for several seasons.

  1. Sowing and establishment (BBCH 0): Sow indoors mid-late April, seeds on their side about 1.5cm deep in individual pots (RHS); PFAF confirms early-mid spring sowing in a rich soil in a greenhouse, germinating within about 2 weeks. Harden off before June, then transplant outdoors once frost risk has passed, with initial protection (RHS; PFAF).
  2. Vegetative growth (BBCH 3): Extremely vigorous climbing/trailing growth -- RHS records 8-12m in UK cultivation, PFAF up to 25m of shoots in a single British season. Needs a rich, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, sheltered, with plenty of room to spread over an archway or trellis (RHS).
  3. Flowering (BBCH 6)
  4. Fruiting and harvest (BBCH 8): Oval fruit, green with white mottling, up to 35cm diameter and averaging 9kg (RHS; PFAF).

Drainage Moist but well-drained, or well-drained (RHS); PFAF notes it also tolerates wet conditions and nutritionally poor soil
Lifecycle RHS treats it as an annual climbing/trailing squash; PFAF describes it as a genuinely perennial climber (USDA zones 9-11) grown as an annual in temperate, frost-prone climates like the UK.

When to pick: Fruit is edible at any stage, used young like a courgette in soups and curries, or left to mature (RHS; PFAF). PFAF gives a US timeline of about 3 months from seed to first harvest and 6 months to a fully mature fruit. If the crop tastes bitter, RHS warns not to eat it or feed it to pets -- a real cucurbit toxin risk, not just a flavour note.

Storage

Mature fruit stores for 2 or more years and actually sweetens with age (PFAF).

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against USDA hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with Cooperative Extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
