Stage BBCH Notes
Sowing and germination 0 Direct-sow fresh seed about 0.5cm deep in full sun, well after the last frost once soil is reliably warm; germinates in 7-10 days (Johnny's Selected Seeds).
Thinning and establishment 1 Thin seedlings to 10-15cm apart; water regularly until well established, in lean, well-drained soil (Johnny's Selected Seeds).
Succulent leafy growth 3 Becomes notably drought-tolerant once established, needing only deep, infrequent watering; loves baking full sun and lean soil (Johnny's Selected Seeds).
Continuous harvest 8 Harvest young, tender stems and leaves continuously from about 4-6 weeks after germination, through to 40-60 days maturity; monthly successional sowing keeps up supply (Johnny's Selected Seeds).

What the research guides add

Purslane is a garden weed and a salad plant at once, and NC State describes its toughness.

  • An annual succulent that is drought-tolerant once established and grows in full sun and well-drained soil; propagation is by seed and stem cuttings. (NC State Extension)
  • Its taproot and fibrous secondary roots tolerate poor, compacted soils and drought. (NC State Extension)
  • The flowers are small, yellow and open only briefly in the morning, each replaced by a seed capsule that splits to release dark seeds. (NC State Extension)

Plan next season before the problems start

Almost everything on this page resolves to your own frost dates rather than the calendar — the last spring frost moves by roughly two months between zone 3 and zone 10. The USA Garden Planner works from your zone so the timing is already decided before the season starts.

Every growing guide is checked against RHS, USDA Cooperative Extension, and other named horticultural authorities before publishing. How we check our facts.

How this guide is put together

The growing data on this page — sowing windows, pests, diseases, soil and site requirements — comes from named horticultural sources, listed in References below, checked against USDA hardiness-zone and frost-date data, with Cooperative Extension sources cited directly where one exists for a crop. An automated pipeline assembles that verified data into the page you're reading: it selects which facts to lead with and builds the surrounding prose and layout. It does not invent a date, a source or a number — where a verified value for a field isn't available, the page leaves it out rather than guessing. A person reviews and publishes each page; nothing goes live unverified.
