How to Grow Snake Gourds UK | Complete Growing Guide

Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of moisture. KAU prepares pits 60cm across and 30-45cm deep, mixing well-rotted farmyard manure and fertiliser with the topsoil before sowing.

Water: A sunny position, tolerating light shade. Ecocrop gives an optimal daytime range of 22-35C tolerating 14-38C, with a heavy 2,000-2,500mm of annual rain preferred (700-4,200mm tolerated) -- this is a wet-tropics crop, not a dry-heat one. KAU irrigates every three to four days early on and on alternate days through flowering and fruiting. Frost kills it. Preferred pH 6.5-7, tolerating 6-8.

KAU sows four or five seeds per prepared pit at 2.0 x 2.0m spacing, using 3-4 kg of seed per hectare. Warmth drives germination; below about 14C the crop does not move.
Thinning and establishment
After two weeks KAU removes the weakest seedlings, keeping three plants per pit. Irrigate every three to four days at this stage and get the support up before the vines start running.
Climbing and flowering
Train onto a pandal, trellis or arch. Snake gourd flowers open at night and are moth-pollinated, so an enclosed tunnel will need hand pollination. Switch to irrigating on alternate days as flowering starts.
Fruiting and picking
First immature fruits about two months from sowing. Let the fruit hang free so it grows straight, and keep picking -- a fruit left to mature stops the vine setting new ones.
When to pick: Pick young and pick often. Useful Tropical Plants records immature fruits ready about two months after sowing; left on the vine they go fibrous and inedible long before they reach their full length, so size is not the signal -- tenderness is. A fruit that still dents under a thumbnail is right. Cutting regularly keeps the vine setting more. KAU adds a food-safety point worth repeating: where insecticide or fungicide has been applied, harvest only after at least ten days, and wash the fruit thoroughly before cooking.
Storage
Best used within a few days. The fruit does not store like a wax gourd -- it is thin-skinned and loses condition quickly.
