Stage BBCH Notes
Planting 0 RHS: propagate by seed, or root semi-ripe cuttings in midsummer with bottom heat, or take root cuttings in late winter. NC State: seed is the recommended method, in well-drained to moist soil with plenty of organic matter.
Establishment 3 RHS: grow in a sheltered spot in full sun; the plant is generally pest-free and disease-free, needing little ongoing intervention once established.
Flowering and fruit set 6 RHS: flat-topped sprays of small, yellow-green flowers appear in early summer. NC State: the species is dioecious but female plants are apomictic, setting fruit and seed even without pollination or a male plant nearby.
Fruit ripening and harvest 8 RHS: open clusters of small, red fruits split to reveal black seeds. NC State: harvest in fall once the fruits have split open; dry the seed pods for use as a pepper-like spice.

When to pick: NC State: harvest occurs in fall, once the dark red, lobed fruits split open to reveal the black seeds inside.

Storage

Dry the seed pods for use as a pepper-like condiment or in Chinese five-spice blends (RHS, NC State).
