Annual herb, monocarpic -- flowers, sets seed, then dies. Stems 8-12in tall, branching to a uniform flat canopy. Full sun (6+ hours); tolerates clay, loam and sand with good drainage or occasionally dry conditions. Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost or direct sow 1-2 weeks after; sow groups of 4 seeds at 1/4in depth every 4-8in; SOAKING SEED FOR 8 HOURS BEFORE SOWING AIDS GERMINATION; germinates in 7-14 days. Needs 120 DAYS OF FROST-FREE WEATHER from planting to harvest. Harvest by cutting flower clusters close to the ground once dry and brown, drying them in paper bags and thrashing the bag to release the seed. Problems: aphids, fusarium wilt, alternaria blight, powdery mildew.

A tender annual reaching about 30cm tall with delicate, feathery foliage, producing white flower clusters in summer followed by aromatic seed-bearing fruit. Native to the East Mediterranean.
