The short answer

Site
6+ hours of sun, soil pH 6–7.5
Biggest risk
Allium white rot

Sand leeks (Allium scorodoprasum) — bulbous herbaceous perennial.

Unlike an annual crop, the work here is front-loaded into establishment: get the planting and the site right and the same plants crop for several seasons.

Core growing advice on this page is checked against named horticultural and university-extension sources — see References.

Soil & Growing Conditions

Water: moist but well-drained or well-drained; drought-resistant once established (RHS)

Soil pH range

6 7.5

Span reflects genuine variation between the cited authorities, not a single agreed figure.

Growth Stages

Stage BBCH Notes
Planting 0 Plant bulbs in autumn, 3-6 inches deep, spaced 4-6 inches apart; or propagate by seed sown when ripe or in spring (Nature & Garden, RHS).
Leaf growth 3 Narrow, grassy mid-green leaves develop; the plant thrives in full sun on fertile, well-drained soil (RHS).
Flowering and bulbil formation 6 Leaves die back as flowering begins; long wiry stems in early summer carry purple, umbrella-shaped flower clusters that develop bulbils at their base -- the spread RHS warns can become a nuisance without careful management.
Harvest / dieback 8 Harvest once the leaves yellow and die back, typically late summer to early autumn (Nature & Garden); remove old flowered stems and foliage as the only needed maintenance.

References

  1. Sand leek (Allium scorodoprasum), also called rocambole in some regional usage and Korean pickled-peel garlic, is a Eurasian wild onion native across much of Europe, the Middle East and Korea. Plant bulbs in autumn, about 3-6 inches deep and spaced 4-6 inches apart. Harvest when the leaves start to yellow and die back, typically late summer to early autumn.

  2. Hardiness H6 (hardy in all of UK and northern Europe). Full sun. Soil: chalk, loam or sand; moist but well-drained or well-drained; pH acid/alkaline/neutral. Height 0.5-1m, spread 0.1-0.5m. Time to maturity 1-2 years. Bulbous perennial with narrow, grassy mid-green leaves that die back when flowering begins. Purple flowers bloom on long wiry stems in early summer within umbrella-shaped clusters that develop bulbils at their base. Propagate via seed (when ripe or in spring) or by carefully detaching offsets after lifting bulbs post-flowering. Thrives in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil; container growing advisable where garden soil is heavy clay prone to winter saturation. Easily spreads via bulbils and "has the potential to become a nuisance" without careful management. PESTS: Allium leaf miner, onion fly. DISEASES: onion white rot, onion downy mildew -- named directly for this species, not inferred. Drought-resistant, no pruning needed except removal of old flowered stems and foliage.

Plan next season before the problems start

Short-season growing is arithmetic before it is technique: days to maturity against frost-free days decides what will finish at all. The Canada Garden Planner does that subtraction for your region before you sow.
